Time has flown by and it is time for Agritech Expo again! What are the innovations and new features of the event that visitors and partners can look forward to this year?
Time flies indeed! Agritech Expo has become the biggest event on our agricultural calendar. As you visit Agritech Expo 2016, look out for our new Energy Park designed to offer you innovation and cleaner energy solutions to help you wipe away your electricity outage blues and the ever increasing costs of energy. Our extended Livestock Zone is another must-see area, for you definitely need the right stock genetics and technologies to survive climate change-induced vagaries of weather. Our Expo will, for the first time, also feature live Centre Pivot demonstrations, a very critical feat as Zambian agriculture focuses and seeks to expand irrigated farming at all levels. The all new 4x4 Test Track is another feature that will finally help you decide which 4x4 work horse is best for your farm. We heard you and we have also extended the SME Zone to make sure we bring in as many agro SMEs as possible. This is important to us as we strive to show case the Zambian agricultural industry in totality.

What would you consider as particular highlights for ZNFU as an organisation during 2015?
Our EXPO 2015 will go as one of our major milestones during 2015. Other major 2015 ZNFU milestones included: (i) the successful scaling-up of our prepaid VISA card platform to include over 241,000 GRZ's Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) beneficiaries in 13 pilot districts; (ii) successful lobby for inclusion of all Zambian agricultural export products into the recently signed Bilateral Trade Agreements between Zambia with DRC and Angolan; (iii) facilitation with other stakeholders full operationalisation of the warehouse receipt system under the Zambia Agricultural Commodities Exchange (ZAMACE); and (iv) sustained cordial working relationship with the Zambian Government and other key stakeholders.
Any exciting new projects apart from Agritech Expo that are in the offing for this year?
Our EU funded Agriculture Service Centers Project designed to build four modern one-stop agro-inputs and output marketing centres is another exciting project we have embarked on. The rolling out of the ZNFU core brand prepaid Visa cards to an additional 360,000 smallholder farmers under FISP in 41 districts is another exciting project that will see ZNFU facilitating financial inclusiveness to over 600,000 farmers who otherwise would have remained unbanked and unable to access financial services.
How important is Agritech Expo as an annual forum for the farming sector in this region?
It’s a very critical agricultural technologies and agribusiness forum, not only for Zambia but for our neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, DRC, Angola and Malawi. Agritech Expo has within its first two years opened up agribusiness opportunities for the above named countries in the region. Agritech Expo has also managed to attract 35+ regional and international countries.
How do you see the role of women in the agricultural sector?
In the recent past a number of women have taken keen interest in efficiency and profitability when it comes to farming. I think a number of women would now want to be mechanised and empowered with knowledge in order to do their production well. I foresee a lot of participation from women in trying to get knowledge on their own, and not sending others to attend on their behalf. This is an exciting driver to end poverty going forward.
What will be your message at Agritech Expo this year?
As farmers we have the destiny of our country and nation in our hands. Let us apply all the knowledge and skills to have more food and we need and venture into value addition to earn incomes for ourselves. If we can move from our back row as primary producers we can shape the welfare of the industry.
Zambia’s agricultural sector is facing some challenges currently, including the drought – your thoughts in how the agri community can overcome these challenges?
Climate change is first and foremost not peculiar to Zambia. It’s a global problem. Secondly, climate stress in not new to farmers and so farmers have innovated and adapted to the challenges that we face. We need to stay in contact with others to learn and observe, to push for policies that will help us adapt. We also need to be careful with what we already have. Food wastage is something that we need to deal with from harvest to the fork. As a country we have enough resources to feed the region, we need policies that can make it profitable and less complicated to produce food.
What makes the agricultural sector in Zambia exciting?
Zambia is blessed with abundant water, land, climate that has no extremes and also it has a young population making labour available at all stages of the food chain. The political stability is another bonus to our country. Market to other countries is possible with good infrastructure and policies with our neighbours. We can grow virtually anything in our country but a lot of help is need knowledge transfer, cost of borrowing and storage capacities.
THE ZNFU INTERVIEW: “At Agritech Expo it is important for us to showcase the Zambian agricultural industry in totality”

Exclusive interview with Dr Evelyn Nguleka, Zambia National Farmers Union President – owners of the upcoming Agritech Expo in Chisamba.
Growing German interest in Zambian agri sector German pavilion at Agritech Expo almost doubles this year
“Made in Germany” will make a big impression at the annual Agritech Expo in Chisamba in April when 16 German providers of agri machinery and livestock equipment will be part of the German pavilion – this is almost double compared to last year.
Martin Botzian, of DLG International GmbH, organisers of the official German pavilion from the German Ministry of Agriculture at Agritech Expo says: “we are pleased to be part of the show for the third time. From the beginning of Agritech, two years ago, we have been part of this very well organised show in Zambia. Constantly we are growing our participation from year to year.”
Last year, the German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, H.E. Mr Christian Schmidt was amongst the VIP visitors at Agritech Expo, which Mr Botzian says shows that “the show is very important for the German Ministry”. The event, which is owned by the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU), also hosted Zambian President Edgar Lungu, Zambia’s Vice President, Mrs Inonge Wina and the Zambian Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, H.E. Mr Given Lubinda.
Agri sector exciting for Germans
According to Mr Botzian, the agricultural sector in Zambia is exciting for German companies that sell agri machinery and livestock equipment because “the country has a stable policy environment, which means the government supports the agricultural sector and commercial farming.Farmers are willing to invest.Zambia is a good place to grow crops and there is enough fresh water for irrigation.”
He adds: “cattle also provide beef and dairy products for the population. Processing the raw crops has huge potential. The commercial farming in Zambia will generate enough surplus food to export to Zambia’s neighbours. By starting to commercialise the agricultural land you increase food security, prevent mass migration out of the country into the city and create businesses that add value at a local level to reduce poverty.”
The “made in Germany” products that will be on display on the German pavilion at Agritech Expo includes animal housing installations, animal identification (ear tags), silos, consultation, planning and building of dairy facilities, dung removal systems, cattle breeding and marketing, crop protection, mixers and pumps, silage bags, slat flooring, poultry equipment, modern farming in Zambia, agricultural machinery such as feed mixers, maize choppers, agricultural films and nets as well as milking equipment.
The upcoming Agritech Expo, which is expected to welcome some 15 000 farming professionals, from emerging, to small holder to commercial farmers, and agri experts, takes place at the GART Research Centre in Chisamba from 14-16 April. Chisamba is regarded as an important farming hub in Zambia.
Last year’s second edition of the event drew more than 11 700 visitors, over 100 exhibitors and 150 members of the press.

“Zambia in a good position to take full advantage of its agricultural assets in the future”
-
Agritech Expo expected to gather 15000+ in Chisamba this year
“It is an over-worn cliché to say that Zambia will one day become the ‘bread basket’ of the region but there is no doubt that, despite of current challenges, the future of Zambia’s farmers, both small and large scale, as suppliers of food products to the region and as drivers of Zambian economic growth is very positive.”
This is according to Rob Munro, Director of Strategy at Musika, a Zambian non-profit company that works to stimulate private sector investment in the smallholder market. Musika is a key partner again in the upcomingAgritech Expo, which is expected to welcome some 15 000 farming professionals, from emerging, to small holder to commercial farmers, and agri experts, at the GART Research Centre in Chisamba from 14-16 April.
Agritech Expo is owned by the ZNFU (Zambia National Farmers Union) and last year’s second edition drew more than 11 700 visitors, over 100 exhibitors and 150 members of the press. VIP visitors included the country’s President Edgar Lungu, the Vice President, Mrs Inonge Wina, the Zambian and German Agri Ministers and many other dignitaries and agri experts.
Good news for Zambia
Musika’s Rob Munro states: “Zambia is struggling with a number of difficult macroeconomic challenges at the moment, a power shortage and a drought, all of which affect the farming economy as much as, if not more than, the rest of the business sector. But while the short term picture is quite tough for Zambian agriculture, there is certainly good news at the ‘big picture’ level – Zambia still has plenty of land and water, a stable political environment and a highly resilient, resourceful and diverse farming community. In an age where food is in ever increasing demand locally, regionally and globally, Zambia is in a good position to take full advantage of its agricultural assets in the future.”
Immediate challenge is the drought
He continues: “the most obvious and immediate challenge is the drought that is affecting many parts of the country which will undoubtedly affect yields and agricultural income, which in turn limits the ability of farmers and agribusiness to invest in the growth of the sector.” Last year, Rob was quoted as saying that unpredictable agricultural policies, particularly on grain marketing, also constrain the growth of the sector and affect investor confidence. However, at the start of the New Year, he feels that “while the challenges remain, the direction of travel on this I think is certainly positive.”
With regards to the current drought conditions, Rob adds that “there has been strong collaboration between public and private sectors on making farmers – particularly smallholder farmers – aware of the impending drought and advising on risk mitigation practices such as planting short season or drought tolerant crop varieties. A particularly good example is the Ministry of Agriculture facilitating the integration of commercially available weather insurance into its innovative ‘e-voucher’ scheme for the delivery of its Farm Input Support Programme through private sector input supply channels.”
Rob says Musika’s “support to the Ministry of Agriculture’s ‘e-voucher’ programme has not only extended subsidised access by smallholder farmers to a wide range of agricultural inputs but has also accelerated the growth of the agricultural inputs market significantly in the districts in which it was piloted.”
Another highlight of Musika’s activities last year was its “intensified support to the growth of the agricultural markets in the more isolated regions of Northern Zambia. Over the last year, these regions have seen a substantial increase in the number of agribusinesses offering inputs, technology, information and market access to the farmers of the region. This is of particular relevance in a year such as this where the ‘traditional’ Southern and Central agricultural heartlands of Zambia are experiencing drought; in an era in which such climatic challenges will only increase, the growth of the agricultural industry in the high rainfall North can only be a good thing for the country.”
Limitless opportunities
Various local suppliers to the agri sector agree with Rob’s optimistic outlook for Zambia. “The agricultural sector in Zambia is a dynamic sector,” says Pierre Lombard, CEO of NWK Agri-Services in Zambia, “it has its ups and downs. However it remains one of the main contributing sectors to Zambia’s GDP. What makes it exciting is the interest people and companies have in the country and the opportunities to expand and improve on current activities.”
He adds: “there are thousands of small scale and emergent farmers contributing to the majority of the agricultural output. With help and guidance, they have the potential to grow and increase their contribution and therefore contribute to the development of the agricultural sector as a whole. In short, agricultural opportunities in Zambia are limitless.”
With regards to the drought that Zambia is currently facing NWK’s Pierre Lombard says: “if the country allows for free trade in imports and exports and stability as well as free floating in the Zambian currency it will mitigate any yield loss by a possible increase in price.”
“Zambia is endowed with a large land resource base of over 40 million hectares of arable land” says Michael Bentley, Dealer Principal, Action Auto in Zambia “and the country is abundant with water resources having 40 per cent of the water in Central and Southern Africa. This means Zambia has unimaginable opportunities for food production to feed the entire sub-Saharan region!”
Susan Mennell, Managing Director at CFAO Zambia Limited, says “with the poor copper prices and mine closures Zambia is going to look to the agricultural sector for more exports. Zambia is able to produce excellent crops and excesses can be exported.”
Exposing the agri community to technology
Musika’s Rob Munro says “before Agritech Expo, Zambia never had a means by which the whole agricultural community, from smallholder farmer to corporate agribusiness, was able to come together to see, understand and invest in new technology. In my opinion, Agritech Expo has been hugely influential in exposing the community to this technology and driving forwards the advancement of modern farming in Zambia.”
Already Zanaco (Zambia National Commercial Bank) has confirmed that it is returning as the exclusive diamond sponsor of the event. Other big names in the farming sector that will be there are AFGRI, who are platinum sponsors, and Action Auto, JCB, John Deere, SARO and Zamseed who are all gold sponsors.
Agritech Expo is organised by Spintelligent, leading Cape Town-based trade exhibition and conference organiser, and the African office of Clarion Events Ltd, based in the UK.
